Everyone made doing a job a bad thing

Because a startup is cool…..

As said by Gary Vaynerchuk, we live in an era of fake entrepreneurs. Everyone just wants to own a startup and be a cofounder, mentioning it on their LinkedIn page. There is a lot of money in the system. Everyone is ready to just invest a lot of money in whatever idea you have. You just need to have the right contacts. Everyone is trying to be the next Steve Jobs/Bill Gates/Jeff Bezos.

With all this, the people who were happy in their job and were living a fulfilled life, are also now trying to follow the trend and be an entrepreneur. And not just “an entrepreneur”, they want to be someone who built a billion-dollar business. Anything other than that is just extremely uncool.

But, the hard truth is, not everyone actually wants to be an entrepreneur. I believe Entrepreneurship is a profession like other professions which is much more demanding and requires skills in very different areas. So, the whole concept to actually “Quit your job!!” and become an entrepreneur came into place on the basis of a predicate. The predicate was that “you hate your job”.

I believe there is no reason to become an entrepreneur and leave a job that you really love. If you like waking up daily and doing something, then I don’t see a single point why you would want to start your own company. Some might argue, that it is almost impossible to be rich and have the life you always wanted by just doing a job and I completely disagree with it. There are many people in their 20s earning north of $1 million per year on a day job and with that, they have job security, they have good healthcare provided by the company. They have much more time to spend with their family than an entrepreneur. The most successful entrepreneurs have actually mentioned how were their initial days. They were full of shit. They used to sleep in their offices, working hard every waking hour. But, they did it because they actually loved doing it. Everyone cannot love doing that.

Even if the money is less which you earn from your day job. There are many other side hustles which you can take up to build your income streams. There are many stories of different people building multi-million dollar businesses just doing youtube, documenting their life while doing their day job. They live a comfortable life, which is much less stressful than an entrepreneur. You can also be an artist. You might be a great painter, a great singer, a great guitarist, a great writer, and the good part with the internet is that you can monetize almost anything with it. You can even monetize your Linkedin or Twitter account with affiliate marketing.

People wanted to escape their awful job, quit the rat race to start their own business, but now this has become just another rat race, where everyone just wants to start their own business. There are many tv shows which made it just so cool, that everyone wanted to do it and build that billion-dollar company. But, no one is really ready to put in that many hours. Everyone can call themselves a founder, mention it on their LinkedIn profile, and then just do nothing about it.

The missing thing from this whole thing is upskilling. You need to upskill every day and learn a lot of things to actually be able to operate a company. I believe the only reason, a startup can ever succeed is that the people who formed it have such strong determination to actually build something to provide value to others. One should have a lot of empathy to build something big and successful. The more value, you bring to others, the more you will be successful. The one question that everyone really has to answer is that are you really ready to risk everything in your life- be it relationships, your health, and your assets to build something meaningful for billions of people around the world. If the answer is yes, only then you should really quit your job.

You can start a small business too and be an entrepreneur and be rich too. you just have to define what really makes you happy rather than going with the trend and making it big. Trend hopping has been one of my biggest fears. Every time, a new thing comes up, I used to be ready to drop everything that I was doing and just get to it. I believe this is the stupidest thing.

One thing to remember in our life is, the major goal is to be happy and we just need to find out what makes us happy, and the answer for everyone is different. Entrepreneurship is just one way…….
